2:57PM - Semagic test post

Dear Self.
Having days free in which to revise is not an invitation to reorganise your tagging system on delicious. Really, no. Perhaps some work, now? Even if it is of vital importance to now tag 'severus/remus' fics as both 'severus/remus' and 'remus/severus'.

That wasn't a suggestion to go and work out Semagic either. (That said, this is a test post using Semagic to see how the coding works and if I can x-post properly).

Life
It's a little bizarre but it's ridiculously calm here, despite the looming exams. M and P are watching stupid amounts of snooker and darts on tv, D is experimenting with pancakes and I, well, I'm playing around online. I'm listening to a fair amount of folk music at the moment and it's fascinating because they all seem to record the same songs - comparing the Seekers' version with the Simon and Garfunkle one, with the Peter, Paul and Mary one... I don't think my laptop's all that fond of imeem - it keeps crashing the internet.

5:44PM

Sometimes I wonder at how I choose to spend my time. This afternoon I spent a fair amount of time here, a site with a collection of maths jokes. Quoting one here:

One day a farmer called up an engineer, a physicist, and a mathematician and asked them to fence of the largest possible area with the least amount of fence.
The engineer made the fence in a circle and proclaimed that he had the most efficient design.
The physicist made a long, straight line and proclaimed "We can assume the length is infinite..." and pointed out that fencing off half of the Earth was certainly a more efficient way to do it.
The Mathematician just laughed at them. He built a tiny fence around himself and said "I declare myself to be on the outside."

Okay, I said just one but this one was irresistible:
Top ten excuses for not doing homework:

1.I accidentally divided by zero and my paper burst into flames.
Isaac Newton's birthday.
2. I could only get arbitrarily close to my textbook. I couldn't actually reach it.
3. I have the proof, but there isn't room to write it in this margin.
4. I was watching the World Series and got tied up trying to prove that it converged.
5. I have a solar powered calculator and it was cloudy.
6. I locked the paper in my trunk but a four-dimensional dog got in and ate it.
7. I couldn't figure out whether i am the square of negative one or i is the square root of negative one.
8. I took time out to snack on a doughnut and a cup of coffee.
9. I spent the rest of the night trying to figure which one to dunk.
10. I could have sworn I put the homework inside a Klein bottle, but this morning I couldn't find it.

And yes, if I thought I'd actually get away with any of them, I would be trying it ^_^

A/N: originally written for round 5 of [info]blind_go. Thank you [info]aiwritingfic and [info]macey_muse for the beta and for encouraging me to post it despite the *cough* crack. More extensive notes at the end. This one's for [info]aiwritingfic for dragging me into HnG when I had thought I was quite happy vegetating in PoT. Shows how much I knew.

2:51PM - Blind Go Guessing

A couple of people have expressed an interest, so this is how the guessing rationale went for Macey and myself. Thoughts on my own fics are here, if anyone's interested.

the guessing argument (ignoring most of the incorrect guesses and with mysterious mentions to the spreadsheet) )

Many thanks to all those who talked about spreadsheets to me in chat and gave me nice ideas for columns. That's definitely the way I'm going for future rounds because it worked quite well *evil grin*.

Blind_Go
thoughts on my fics and on the reveal )
So, [info]blind_go is over for the round. [info]subrosa_tennis next. No, [info]tenifriends next. Unless I start work on my WIPs... I think I might have signed up for more than I'd anticipated XD.
And this post is already a fair amount longer than I'd planned *_* - better stop here.

Oh, a few people were interested, so there's a post explaining how [info]macey_muse and I went about guessing here.

Water
It's strange how these things go. No drinking water in the flat since Friday. Today we appear to have lost hot water as well - all we have left is the potentially poisonous cold-water tap. The two kettles are getting more use than they have all year! I think I'm going to miss the craziness of halls next year.

Blind_Go
Guesses submitted. Didn't make the entire list but had a stab at a lot of them. No one has posted on my guessing post yet - I'll admit to being very curious so if you do have thoughts, please drop an idea there sometime before reveals go up.

Today
Was fun ^_^. I was at the LondonExpo for the day, where I met up with [info]giving_ground and [info]yuki_scorpio, both of whom had impressive costumes (and swords). We spent a lot of time wandering up and down the building (20 laps!) looking at the cosplayers and taking random photographs. I'm now a little dead and plan to sleep in tomorrow.

Water
Have now learned to boil the water and then put it in the fridge in order to have some at hand when I want it (why does getting a drink require so much forward planning?).

Writing
I start my revision tomorrow so there will most likely be fic going up in the next few days as I attempt to procrastinate :D

11:22PM

Life as a Student
On the whole, I like living in halls. When they cut off your drinking water with no warning, it gets to be a bit of a bore. Boiling water before you drink it? *pulls face* That means having a drink requires foreward planning!

The NHS
Love it or hate it, it's here to stay. That said, they do make me laugh sometimes. I was referred for physio back in February and was warned that there'd be a 12 weeks waiting list. I have attempting to phone three times in the past week. I've called twice out of hours (4.30pm on a weekday?) and once called the wrong hospital *sighs*. With my luck they'll give me an appointment that clashes exactly with an exam.

Tenifriends
Well, I've signed up. Given that my issues with writing anything more than preslash are fairly evident, it should suit me well enough. Fingers crossed for a nice prompt. I think I was rather difficult with my character choices though - asking for Yamato and anyone, Tezuka and Yukimura, Yukimura and Yagyuu is unlikely to endear me to the mods. Oops?

Blind Go
Guessing closes tomorrow night (well, very early on Sunday morning but no way will I be awake then ^_^). Grabbed [info]macey_muse earlier and we hammered out a few more. The single-fic author list is very daunting in length - I doubt we'll make it all the way through in the time.

Pedants Anonymous
There was a bit in the Independent a few days back that made me think of fandom. Apparently there is a support group for those who are addicts to linguistic purity. Poeple who 'faint when you split an infinitive' or 'wave a stick angrily when you say "less than six"'. I can't quote the whole article so just one other line, a quote from a member of the group.
"What is so useful about these meetings is that we are all experts on language, and therefore skilled sufferers. Alcoholics are just people who drink but pedants have great acquired knowledge."
Something to think about the next time we start arguing the relative merits of dictionaries (though the OED still trumps all ^_^)

Anime Expo
Anime Expo in London tomorrow. I'll be meeting up with [info]giving_ground and [info]yuki_scorpio (and probably anyone in PoT cosplay). So, early start tomorrow morning if I'm to catch the train up, so early bedtime now. Apparently I fail at that last according to my clock. Well, earlier than some nights, anyway.

Whistle!
Whistle! 19 is out and sitting on my desk ^_^. I have Wednesdays off so I went into Forbidden Planet and picked up a copy. I'd finished it by the time I got home and have since reread it twice (*obsessive*). It's just starting to diverge from anime canon which is fascinating because it's back into the unknown. Well, kind of. It is a football manga and there are only so many plots that get used but there are new characters and teams coming in who I haven't met before, which is fun.

Shibusawa got a few mentions (and wow I'm predictable - why do I always go for the captains and the goalkeepers?). I'm starting to like Kaku Eishi very much as well. One of the omake strips had a Captain Tsubasa joke and I feel quite smug at spotting it ^_^

Coming Second
For a while, I was quite disapproving of Sanada's 'coming second is meaningless' philosophy at Kantou. That said, I came second in a tournament yesterday and I'm a lot more sympathetic now *hypocrite*. The thing about knock-out tournaments is that the team who comes second ends with a loss. You feel great when you make it into the final but settling for silver feels anticlimatic, as if you could have done better. Coming third, on the other hand, you finish with a win so you're fired up and ready for the next one. There was a line in Whistle somewhere (why did I leave most of them back home?) which was something like 'in the end, all that matters is winning'. I think it was Sakaki who said it. I guess sport's weird that way - wherever you finish you're always thinking that you could have done better.

Unspeakable Darkness
It only took me two years but finally I'm moving with this again. Editing in progress at the moment, hopefully followed by new stuff. Apologies for everyone for the chapter spam that's likely to take place if I keep up my current pace. I'm not posting to the comms for a bit, so that should hopefully lower it a bit. Again, I think I'll wait until I've got more done before xposting to my ij.

Higamyu
I've decided that I liked. New Tezuka is great even if he does look like he was dragged through a hedge backwards and I was spotting Tezuka/Yukimura and Tezuka/Sanada subtext that blatantly wasn't really there but shhh. Not convinced by Golden Pair but I guess you can't have everything. Higa were on crack - search 'Viking Horn' on youtube if you don't believe me.

Meme
I really shouldn't be doing this - far too many wips already but...
Stolen from [info]aiwritingfic The Hypothetical AU Meme: Take any one of the fandoms you know I write and give me a type of AU (space opera AU, pirate AU, superhero AU, What-If-X-Happened etc.). I will then explain what story from that fandom I would write for that AU.

A/N: It's taken me quite a while but I'm ready to continue this one now. I'm doing some heavy editing at the moment, after which chapter updates are likely to slow down. Concrit is more than welcome ^_^
